Kathrin Hölzl (GER) was in a league of her own yesterday when she clinched victory in the women's Giant Slalom race in Aspen (USA). Following her World Championship title last year this is her first ever victory in the World Cup. Besides Hölzls fantastic first place the Fischer team also put in a strong performance as a whole. Nicole Gius and Denise Karbon (both ITA) came eighth and ninth respectively to round off what was a remarkable day for the inventor of the Hole Ski.

The delighted winner spoke about her first World Cup victory in the following interview:

You normally have problems hitting top gear in the first run. Everything went really well yesterday though and you were in first place at the halfway mark. What was different?

I can't say exactly. Yesterday, I thought to myself I simply have to get out there, feel confident and let the skis do the talking. I didn't want to finish the race in 23rd place like last year, so I took a different approach.

What was it like to go into the second run as leader?

I was so nervous I just wanted everything to be over and done with as quickly as possible. That's how it always is at the start though, but the nervousness disappears as soon as the run begins and I just focus on the race itself.

Did you know how fast you were during the race? How did you feel?

Actually I wasn't that convinced in the second run that it was going to be enough. But then I thought to myself that the others couldn't have been that strong either. It was quite hard today, and nobody feels brilliant in such a situation. So all I had to do was fight!

What were the conditions like? Would you say that they were ideal for you?

They were similar to Val d'Isère when I won the World Championship. A difficult, steep and icy slope with poor ground visibility. I can cope well in situations like that.

After last year we all knew that you would go on to win more races. Will we see you on the top of the podium again a few more times this season?

I certainly hope so! It is a wish that I would like to fulfill. This season it's important for me to be consistent and really contend for top placings instead of just hanging around seventh place the whole time. This will be particularly important in February of course…

How did you spend the rest of the great day?

First I just want to get back to my hotel room for some peace and quiet! My family was waiting for me to call them. After that I was focusing on the next race because there's always another race round the corner. Top of the list though was to make my way to the doping test!
