"Amazing - I'm already at least third!" (Martin Misof, before the super finals)

But things got even better: Martin Misof won the Freeski category at freestyle.ch 2006 in Zurich. Without being seeded as a fixed starter in the finals on Sunday he already came up with a series of solid runs on the 28m high Landiwiese ramp in the pre-qualifying session on Friday evening. Martin went on to win the qualification by a clear margin, leaving some big names of the scene behind him at the same time. Fischer rider Richard Permin likewise qualified for the next round on Friday at the biggest freestyle event in Europe. Some 46,000 visitors in only three days were enthralled by the contests.

Fischer riders have to qualify

In the qualification on Saturday Martin and Richard had to compete against the seeded riders. Both put in fantastic top-quality performances and showed extremely technical tricks: Martin's switch 1080 mute and Richie's switch 7 true-tail left both the judges and the audience wanting more. Placed 3rd and 6th respectively the two made it to the final 8, with their consistent performances seeing them reach the crossover session in the evening in which all disciplines (Freeski, Snowboard, Moto-X, Skateboard) competed against each other in a show for the audience to choose their crossover.champ. In his first round Richie Permin was up against Swiss snowboarder Markus Keller who proved to be more popular with the Zurich audience and meant that unfortunately Richie's evening was over earlier than he would have wished. With switch 900, switch 1080 and switch backflip Martin made it all the way to the super final where he was beaten only by skateboarder Sandro Dias (BRA).

Final pushes riders to the limit

Martin Misof then clinched the highly sought after title on Sunday in the final: the last 8 riders competed for a place in the super final in a thrilling 45-minute session. Martin took advantage of all his routine and performed switch 5s, switch 720 double-grabs, switch 9s and switch 1080 with such confidence that he made it to the final, where he was up against Jon Olsson (SWE) and Charles Gagnier (CAN). Despite missing out only narrowly on the super final, fourth-placed Richard Permin was more than satisfied with how the weekend went. Daniel Tanzer, product developer at Fischer, gave the riders top support, looking after Martin and Richie's Addicts personally.

Martin Misof out on top

In the super final each rider had two runs with marks awarded for the better of the two. Still in 3rd place after the first run, Martin's second jump was simply unbeatable. With a perfect switch 1080 mute Martin clinched victory in the first and without doubt one of the most important contests of its kind in Europe. Even after the results had been announced, Martin still couldn't quite believe what he had actually just achieved. It was only when the freestyle.champs 06 jacket and the obligatory magnum of champagne were handed to him that it began to sink in and the grin wouldn't go away. Martin: "Hey, wanna know what happened today!? I've won freestyle.ch!!"
