It was raining when arrived at Lake Placid and checked into Best Western's Adirondack Inn. The trip from the Albany airport only took two and a half hours. As the temperature would drop during the night, I was expecting icy conditions the next day. When I got off the chair at the Whiteface Ski Area, I was pleasantly surprised. The staff at Whiteface had worked through the night blowing snow and grooming the slopes. They still had some snowmaking in progress, but everything was edgeable and the conditions were excellent, considering.

MOGULS
I was once again covering Freestyle World Cup mogul event at Whiteface Mountain and the competition was intense. Canada's Justine Durfour-Lapointe topped the podium and took the gold for the women with a heli-grab and a back-flip, with USA's Heidi Kloser winning the silver medal and teammate Hannah Kearney winning the bronze after blowing a turn at the top of the course . Hannah was very disappointed with her performance but she made up for her mistake by throwing some terrific jumps. This was Hannah's sixth podium in a row.

The men's mogul event saw Alex Bilodeau (Canada) take the first place spot on the podium, with a time of 21.93, completing a bdf and a 1080 on the 2nd jump. USA's Pat Deneen came in second with a time of 20.99, doing a D-spin and bPb. Teammate Brad Wilson mounting the podium in third place. His time was 21.52

Pat Deneen's place on the podium guaranteed him a berth on this year's U.S. Olympic Team where his speed in the bumps and aerial maneuvers give him a good shot at a medal.

ACCOMMODATIONS
The Adirondack Inn was located right on Main St. in Lake Placid, across from the street from the Olympic Center with its ice skating rink and speed skating oval. My room was very nice and overlooked Main Street. The inn had been recently renovated with rustic Adirondack decor. The Best Western Adirondack Inn offers guests 49 non-smoking rooms and suites. Every morning, there was a complimentary breakfast with bacon and eggs, pastries, cereal, coffee, juice and more in their spacious dining room. I was happy to see that high-speed, wireless Internet access was available in toe lobby. There were a wide variety of other amenities, including coffee/tea makers, hair dryers, refrigerators, and satellite TV in every room. There was a pool, billiard room and a weight room in addition to board games and other interesting things to keep you occupied after a hard day skiing. If you are looking for a great place to stay in the heart of Lake Placid, I can recommend the Adirondack Inn. To make a reservation call:(800) 556-2424 and tell them that you found them in the Ski Bum News.

The Freestyle World Cup a Lake Placid's Whiteface Mountain was a thrilling experience. As a precursor to the Olympics the competition was intense. For all you skiers out there, the Freestyle contests will blow your mind. If you are into thrills and spills, make sure you tune into the Olympics at Sochi. If you like to see skiers fly high into the air while they twist and turn, watch the Aerials. For those of you who are trying to master the moguls, watch the mogul competition. The coming Winter Olympics promises to be a really great show!
