The New Zealand Snowboard Nationals got underway at Cardrona Alpine Resort with over 25cm of fresh snow giving superb conditions for the CBS Dual Slalom.

More than sixty riders, ranging in age from 11 to 39, raced against the clock and each other, two at a time down the dual slalom course.

John Shelley from Taupo took the title of National Men's Slalom Champion ahead of CardronaÆs SAS coach, Tom Wilmott. Richard Hunt from Ohakune came in third.

Wanaka's Juliane Bray retained her National Women's title although she had to make do with second place behind Zuzana Vojtechova from the Czech Republic. Rachel Newton took third.

In the junior field, the boys' event was very close with the top four all finishing within less than a second of the fastest time. Wanaka's Andy Clark (18) just beat Clayton Barker (18), also from Wanaka, into first while Jana McLeod (17) beat fellow Queenstowner Christa Woerlee (19) in the girls.

In the youngest category, 15-year-old Ellie Richards from New Plymouth took out the girls ahead of Whitney Dagg (15) from Wanaka. In the boys, Phil Dominick (15) from Auckland triumphed over Mitchell Brown (16) from Mt Manganui.

The afternoon saw a huge field of nearly 90 competitors get ready to compete head to head in the specially constructed 540s Boarder-X course. Time trials were completed but heavy snowfall and resulting poor visibility saw the event postponed until Sunday 7 September.

The Nationals continue tomorrow with the Northwave Halfpipe and finish on Saturday with the Groovestar Slopestyle.
