The economic policies of President Obama have had an adverse impact on ski country. High gas prices, a drop in the average household income of $4,000 and across the board inflation has hit ski areas hard. Colorado Ski Country USA announced at its Annual Meeting, that its 22 member resorts only hosted 6.16 million skier visits during the 2011-12 ski season. This represents a decrease of 790,000 skier visits, compared to last season. Compared to the five year average, resort skier visits are down 11.9 percent in Colorado. The overall snow-related decline interrupted the recovery resorts had been building since 2008/09.

On a national level, skier visits overall are down 15.7%. Skier visits for Colorado were down 11.3 percent. With skier visits in Vermont were off by 11% last year and New Hampshire skier visits are down 13.4% from the ten-year average. Northeast ski areas were down 20.2% with New Hampshire down 20% from the 2010-11 winter. Southeastern ski areas, down 13.9%, the Northeast was down 13%, and the Pacific Southwest was down 11.7%. Midwest was down 10.6 percent. Interestingly in Canada, ski area visits were at a record 16 million for the 2010/2011 season.

Much of the ski industry in the US was confronted with weather challenges last year combined with a lack of discretionary spending caused by the continued economic slump caused by Obama's weak economic policies.

Colorado is favorably positioned for rare dry spells given that resorts are at higher elevations where the air is dryer and colder, therefore allowing the snow to maintain consistency. Aided by colder temperatures favorable for snowmaking, resort snowmakers and slope groomers were able to maintain a quality snow surface throughout most of the season.

Ski resorts have so much to offer visitors and in some cases world class skiing is just one of a menu of activities. For many people, the season was more about being outside and spending time with friends and family near home than taking in the beautiful outdoors and wonderful amenities of resorts.

Although there is nothing we can do about the weather, we can vote Obama out of office and ensure a sane energy policy and increased prosperity for America.
