Here we are at the end of May and Killington is still experiencing cold weather and snow. I thought I was getting in the last of the "good" skiing over a month ago but Killington is still going strong. If the cold weather keeps, they will set a record. They are already the only ski area open in the East and could be open from October until June this year. With a ski season that spans nine months, the Killington season pass holders really get their money's worth. There are plenty of events at Killington in the spring to delight skiers, snowboarders and party animals. The Bear Mt. Mogul Challenge is the best party at Killington. There are exciting snowboarding events and the wild antics of the Mini Skirt Party where EVERYONE has to have a miniskirt on to get in.
This year was no exception. Saturday was a lovely, sunny day and the crowd was partying their brains out at the bottom of the mountain. The bumps are always big as VW's on Outer Limits but I am finally able to handle them, IF the snow conditions are right. I can ski the top fairly well, but my legs have been known to give out about 1/3 of the way down. After that, it is more of a struggle, necessitating a few stops on the way down to rest.
The party at the base was really great! There were thousands of people and Killington had the grill out on the porch where they were doing burgers, sausage, chicken, and steak. They also had: burgers, chicken, roast pig, sushi, shrimp, clam bar and plenty to drink.
If you are like me, you have put your skis away for the year and are thinking about the beach. Maybe, I'm being a little too rash. Maybe I should throw my skis into the back of the car and head up to Killington for a few more days of skiing. I can come back with some excellent stories about spring skiing and a nice tan. The tan I got the last time I was there has faded. Buy my memories of some great skiing and meeting some great people has not.
The skiing was fantastic in the middle of April and the sun shine brought out a few gals in bikinis. I made a few new friends sunning themselves watching the bumpers ski Superstar.
Killington never disappoints me. No matter how many times I go there, I am never bored. There are always great trails to ski and interesting people to meet. In early April, the skiing is always fabulous. So, if you get a chance, grab your skis and head up to Killington. Look for me wondering around with a camera around my neck and a black parka or fleece with SkiBumNews.com on the back and a big smile on my face.
