The photographer Monte, who went to South America on a little ski trip, with lift tickets and accommodations complements of the Ski Bum News. He sent us a few of the photos he took. This was his third trip to South America and he had a blast.
It doesn't take much to get me to contact a ski area and have you represent the Ski Bum News. All you have to do is be able to write about your trip and provide us with the story and a few photos. Monte was able to get us the story which we published in last month's issue but technical problems delayed the photos.
There are three major ski areas in the Carillons region: La Parva, El Colorado and Valle Nevado. There was 200 inches of snow when he was there, so the skiing was great. An affordable place to stay on the mountain is in one of the club refugios. a hut ranging from basic bunks to rather elaborate lodges that are owned by mountaineering or hiking clubs. Besides being cheap I think that the contact with the locals is a good thing. The view at sunset was enough to take your breath away.
Valle Nevado had quite a bit of snow and it was fast. The scenery in the back bowls was incredible, you can see glaciers off to the south.
Monte has promised to write up more of his adventures, so keep watching for more of his SUMMER ski adventure in South America.
