I've stayed at a lot of ski lodges, hotels, B&Bs, hostels and motels in my many years as a ski writer. The Salt City Inn in Salt Lake City is a real discovery. It's one of the best bargains I have ever found in all of my travels. You can stay there for a modest $25 per night (plus tax) and it's a real deal ($135 per week for longer stays). Located just off Rt. 15, it's convenient to all the great ski areas in the Salt Lake region (Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, The Canyons, Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley, Snowbasin, and Sundance).

Now for $25 per night you can't expect very much. We found the rooms were sparse but clean and had a bath, TV, microwave and mini-fridge. The motel provides free coffee and the Hispanic bakery next door sold me a large pasty for breakfast for only 54 cents.

Now the Salt City Inn is a little hard to find. The directions on Map Quest say to take "80 WEST towards SALT LAKE/RENO/2100 SO/1300 SO/900 SO - go 5.0 mi. Take exit #312 towards 600 NO. - go 0.7 mi. Turn on N 900 W - go 0.6 mi. Turn on W 1000 N - go < 0.1 mi." The motel is located at 1025 N 900 W on the corner of N 900 W and W 1000 N. It is very hard to see at night because the lighted sign faces the highway, not the street and the other sign that faces the street isn't lighted.

We drove all over the area before I spotted the sign. First, we followed the directions and could not find it. We tried driving down N 900 W street and when we came to the corner of W 1000 N, the street ended at the ramp to Rt. 15, so we went up the ramp. We re-traced our route and could not find the motel. We stopped at a convenience store (actually located less than a block away) and asked directions from the store keeper and the Coca-Cola driver and they didn't know where it was. We had failed to notice the driveway for the Hispanic bakery next to the ramp to Rt. 15. Finally, I spotted the sigh, so when YOU are trying to find the place, look for the sign for Hector's Baby Shop and you will see the Salt City Inn situated behind that building.

If you are a real ski bum, trying to stretch your dollar and ski the best Utah has to offer, the Salt City Inn is a real find . . . IF you can find it. You can stay there for a week for less than it costs to stay one night at most ski lodges in the area. For reservations call: (801) 364-1035. Tell them the Ski Bum News sent you and save your cash for more important things like lift tickets and beer.
