A VISIT TO WATERVILLE VALLEY

By Paul Maraschiello

I took a day trip to Waterville Valley, just in time to ski there on the last day of their season and caught some kids doing fabulous "air". Waterville is a nice little ski area located in the middle of New Hampshire. It had been cold the night before, so the snow had set up and the conditions varied from ice to frozen hard-pack to death cookies to sand. Being from Killington, I preferred the ice.

I had a great time skiing this mountain and ran into a few "dudes" doing a little "air" and hanging with their "buds"at the Alpine Park. These skiers and snowboarders would take a jump and then climb back up the hill to do it again. I got a great shot of Kerry Fitzgerald taking some big air on her board. Other snowboarders were doing their stuff, along with one exceptional skier named Paul Cotter. He was doing some fabulous stuff that included a loop-de-loop with an iron cross and a grab at the apex of the loop! The snowboarders and freestylers have a name for this trick, they call it a back flip with a mute grab but I will just let the photos speak for them selves.

I caught Zak Fishkin doing some great jumps and helicopters. Other guys were doing back scratchers, zootnick grabs, and other big air. I watched these young athletes for about hour, clicking my shutter and capturing their outstanding performance. If only I was young enough to dare these death-defying areal stunts.

Waterville Valley is a really nice hill where you can ski without the hassle of long lift lines and work on your areal maneuvers and appear full-blown on the freestyle scene like some of these unknown young athletes will so some day.

If any of you guys see this article and recognize yourself or your buddies, e-mail me and I will add names to these photos. Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to writing about you guys and gals when you make it BIG!
